Since 1980, some manufacturers of integrated circuits, managed to produce a chip, which contains in a package similar to the common integrated circuit, a powerful logical system capable of being programmed, and whose operation is similar to the CPU of a computer. Additionally, manufacturers incorporated features such as arithmetic and logical unit, memories PROM, EPROM, EEPROM, RAM, I/O lines, able to handle currents up to 25 mA, Buses, generators of clock pulses, counters, and converters A/D among others.

These arrangements give the microcontroller power and versatility, not before achieved, and may replace, one of them, a circuit before performed with many chips.
